Amazon.com Question Please Help

I have a debit gift card thing I got for birthday (back in April) that I haven't spent yet and it expires soon (as in January first) and I wanted to spend it on amazon but II have question first.

Does amazon charge you when you order the things (meaning right away) or when they ship the books to you?

There is a list of books I want to preorder but am not sure when they charge you. If you could help it would very much appreciated. Thanks

I'm pretty sure they charge everything right when you order it, and then you get the receipt and everything when your packages arrive.

I pre-ordered alot of stuff awile ago (I ended up cancelling the orders) and they don't charge it to your credit card till it's shipped, or at least in stock. I am Canadian so I use Amazon.ca but I'm sure it works the same in that regard.
